    Book details

This work is an edition of the memoirs of the late Dr. Marjorie Reeves, a distinguished woman scholar of the twentieth century. Reeves combined outstanding achievements in medieval studies with major contributions to educational thinking and policy making in Britain. The earlier chapters of the work (I-V) provide an illuminating account of Dr Reeves' family background in liberal-minded. Nonconformist circles in rural Wiltshire, where education was prized. These chapters will be of interest to local historians. Subsequent chapters (6-8) describe her life as a woman student in Oxford and London, her career as a teacher and lecturer at a Teacher Training College, followed by her return to Oxford as a Tutorial Fellow at St Anne's College. There is much of value to historians of education in chapters 6-11. In particular, the concluding chapter outlines Dr Reeves' involvement with the debates that led, first to the 1944 Education Act, and then to ongoing debates about educational values. The chapter illustrates Dr Reeves' strong belief in the humanist tradition of education of the whole person, as opposed to mere utilitarian acquisition of useful knowledge and skills. There are many reflections on the balance between personal freedom and social/intellectual discipline.
